The learning starts with the introduction of 3D shapes, before identifying 2D shapes on the surfaces of 3D shapes. Sorting shapes and reasoning about shapes helps develop understanding, and later in the unit shapes are used to look at patterns, developing further reasoning skills. The learner will start to use the vocabulary of shape and begin to recognise that shapes can be viewed from different angles and in different orientations yet still remain the same shape.
Year 1 Shape consists of:
- Parent/tutors guide
- Shape 1 – I can recognise and name common 3D shapes.
- Shape 2 – I can recognise and name common 2D shapes.
- Shape 3 – I can recognise and explain patterns using my knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes.
